For more details about the scope of the research activities under the label of 'pragmatics', read the Introduction in the demo version of the Handbook of Pragmatics online.

The IPrA Research Center has been in existence since 1986 as a research group dependent on regular academic channels for its funding. It was hosted by the Wilrijk campus of the University of Antwerp (which was then a separate institution known as the Universitaire Instelling Antwerpen). Over the years, more interest developed locally at the University of Antwerp (spread out over different campuses) and the Antwerp Center for Pragmatics came into being. After the merger (in 2003) of the different institutions that now constitute the University of Antwerp, the two names have co-existed for one and the same research group.
Some of the activities of the IPrA Research Center are mentioned explicitly in the IPrA Constitution; these all involve people from outside the University of Antwerp as well as from inside. These include:

  1. the Handbook of Pragmatics project
  2. the Bibliography of Pragmatics project
  3. the editorial work for the IPrA journal Pragmatics, and the 'library'
